20050825 - Dr. Vasant Khachane performs a new heart procedure
nicknamed "Mini Maze" on Bevan Dupre, of Cheshire, on Thursday at the
Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven. The procedure is a minimally
invasive surgery to control atrial fibrillation - a heart rhythm
disorder that can cause a stroke if left untreated. The surgeons will
insert an endoscopic camera through two small incisions on either side
of the patient's chest. Once the site of the problem is located, a
radio frequency clamp is deployed to destroy the cells causing the
irregularity and ultimately restoring normal heart rhythm and blood
flow. (Brian Cassella / The Hartford Courant)
